The Beginning of Heart Disease

The Beginning of Heart Disease
By Sky Joe

Research has shown that the number of people who get heart diseases varies tremendously from country to country. "Heart disease" refers to a disorder of the heart. However it is not as simple as what the words describe. It affects the network of blood vessels through which the heart pushes blood with each of its 100,000 beats a day. Heart disease usually takes years to develop. There is a common idea that certain diseases are more common in one country as compared to another. Congenital heart disease can be said to be a disease for the rich and affluence. It is closely related to ones lifestyle such as diet, smoking and lack of exercise. Coronary heart disease is also more common in elderly people and four times more common men than in women until old age. Statistics have shown that heart disease is the most common cause of death in young men after accidents.

Heart disease takes years to develop and for the most part of it is the result of inflammation and unseen damage to the blood vessels walls over a long period of time. Without any obvious symptoms, artery walls can thicken and be hardened with plaque and hence will slowly lose their flexibility. These plaque buildups will eventually narrows the space in the arteries through which the blood flows. This will decrease the supply of oxygen-carrying blood throughout the entire cardiovascular system including the coronary arteries, which deliver blood to the heart.

When the arteries are narrowed, they will lose their ability to supply sufficient blood to the body's organs and hence resulting in the heart having to work harder. An additional danger is the possibility of a blood clot or a piece of ruptured plaque getting stuck in an artery and depriving part of the body of its normal blood supply. There are many risk factors for heart disease. People with high blood pressure generally have high cholesterol levels. Hypertension is also usually the beginning of a possible heart disease. If one has both high cholesterol and hypertension, there will most likely be other more serious health problems, which could develop over the years. There is no single action one can take to changes ones life as drastically as taking control of ones blood pressure and cholesterol.
